Scaphite Ammonite in host rock, covered in a beautiful Ruby (like) Ammolite shell (a type of red arragonite, not corundum ruby). This beautiful, Museum grade Scaphite is classified as Phylum Mollusca, Class Cephalopoda, Order Ammonitida, and Family Scaphitidae. This fine specimen comes from the famous Fox Hills formation in South Dakota, USA, the upper cretaceous around 65 million years and 145 million years ago. Fox Hills South Dakota is a location famous for some of the most impressive ammonites and fossils in the world. In addition to the beautiful Ruby Ammolite crust, there are a number of detailed tubercles, ribs, ridges and suture patterns.The Ammonite measures approximately 4 inches X 3.25 inches X 1+ inch thick. The round host rock measures approximately 6 inches X 4.75 inches X 3 inches thick and the whole thing weighs in at approximately 4 lbs 3ozs so its quite hefty in the hand. To find a specimen this beautiful in its original host rock makes for a great collector/museum piece. The Ammonite was photographed in the Sunlight and indoors under halogen light. NOTE: The type and angle of lighting incidence will determine the color and irridescence of the ammolite coated shell. So closely inspect ALL photos. The Ammonite looks different under different types of lighting. Item will be well packed and fully insured. Signature release required.
